Student journalists urged to show off their talents

Aspiring journalists are being invited to show off their talents and bid for a chance of work experience at The Guardian.

Entries for the Guardian Student Media Awards, organised by the national newspaper, are now being accepted – with prizes up for grabs in 13 categories.

Each category carries with it a cash prize for the winner and runner-up, ranging from £250 to £1,000, and some also offer free flights from easyJet and work experience at either the Guardian and Sky News.

Judges will also choose one overall winner who will scoop an extended six-week work placement at the Guardian and a living allowance of £1,000 to spend during that time.

The competition is open to student journalists, editors, designers and photographers, and – with the exception of Student Photographer of the Year – all the work submitted must have been published during the current academic year, from September 2003 to June 2004.

Awards will be presented in the following categories:

  • Student Newspaper of the Year
  • Student Magazine of the Year
  • Student Reporter of the Year
  • Student Feature Writer of the Year
  • Student Photographer of the Year
  • Student Publication Design of the Year
  • Student Website of the Year
  • Student Critic of the Year
  • Small Budget Publication of the Year
  • Student Sports Writer of the Year
  • Student Diversity Writer of the Year
  • Student Travel Writer of the Year
  • Student Columnist of the Year

The deadline for entries is Friday, July 9, with the exception of the Student Website category, where the deadline is April 30.

Winners will be announced during a ceremony in November.
