Gazette scoops award for "invaluable" coverage

The Evening Gazette has won a top national award for its coverage on the work of the RSPCA.

The Teesside newspaper scooped the animal welfare charity’s Regional Award for Print Media for the contribution its coverage of animal issues has made to the RSPCA over the past 12 months.

Dave Millard, RSPCA regional superintendent for northern England, said: “Without a doubt the newspaper has proved invaluable in helping to raise the RSPCA’s profile in and around Teesside.

“Coverage has added impetus to fundraising appeals – at one point preventing the Middlesbrough Branch of the RSPCA from going under.”

During the past year the Evening Gazette has covered almost every animal cruelty prosecution brought before Teesside magistrates.

It has also highlighted rehoming appeals made by the charity and provided animal care advice in its weekly Pets Corner page.

Dave said: “From publicising prosecutions, to highlighting inspectorate appeals for information, the newspaper – mostly in the form of reporter Matthew Pardo – is always supportive and always ready to act at short notice.

“Court reports are accurate and hard-hitting and rehoming appeals are accompanied by cracking photographs.”

Gazette editor Steve Dyson said: “We’re delighted to receive this award and all credit must go to reporter Matthew Pardo and feature writer Marie Turbill who ensure our coverage of animal welfare issues is the best in the country.”
