Chance for weeklies to shine

Weekly newspapers are being given the chance to shout about their success – by entering the Newspaper Society’s Weekly Newspaper Awards 2003.

Entries are now being invited for prestigious annual competition, which is designed to recognise the best journalism and advertising in the UK regional weekly newspaper industry.

Thirty-four awards will be handed out this year, and among these will be a host of editorial awards including prizes for the best news journalist, feature writer, photographer and campaigning from a weekly title.

There are also several regional categories, giving free and paid-for papers the chance to compete against other titles in their area.

Among the winning qualities judges will be looking for in a newspaper will be strong front-pages and on- and off-diary news and features, a good use of pictures and evidence of interactivity with its readers through its letter pages.

All the winners will be announced during a gala dinner at the Moat House Hotel in Stratford-upon-Avon on Wednesday, November 5.

The closing date for entries is Friday, September 26.
