Senior External Communications Officer
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced and talented communications specialist to join Bristol City Council’s dynamic, innovative and award-winning External Communications and Consultation team. You will help lead our communications on all aspects of transport in Bristol as we continue to build a better connected and more sustainable network. We have bold and ambitious plans to improve wellbeing, reduce congestion, improve our air quality and deliver carbon reduction targets. You will be at the forefront of communicating how this can be achieved through our transport strategy.
You’ll be self-motivated, creative, flexible, confident and an experienced communications professional who will help create, support and deliver communication, marketing and PR activity across a wide range of activities simultaneously. The post holder will have responsibility for devising, delivering and evaluating strategic and tactical activities to a range of audiences, exploiting all forms of communication and engagement with stakeholder groups to the best effect. They are also expected to support the wider External Communications team.
What do I need to have?
You will have excellent writing skills and the ability to communicate complex messages in a creative and engaging way. With exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to develop and confidently manage relationships with partners both inside and outside the council, you will be a vital part of leading communications activity for key city projects. You will be sensitive to risk and opportunity, briefing and advising senior colleagues accordingly. Specific activities include leading strategic communications and campaign planning and evaluation, stakeholder engagement, writing press releases, web copy, social media, monitoring and event organisation.
You will be well-organised, juggling sharp strategic thinking with the ability to keep an eye on the detail. You’ll be happy working in a busy environment and managing multiple priorities under pressure. Underpinning your skills will be a degree or relevant equivalent industry or vocational qualification and/or significant experience of working in a marketing or communications role.

This is a full-time permanent role, 37 hours per week. Your working days will be Monday to Friday.
