Job Description
Senior Reporter / Sports Reporter
Publication: The Northern Echo
Employer: Newsquest
Location: North-East, England
The Northern Echo, Newsquest’s flagship daily title, is looking for a top-class reporter and also a digital sports journalist with bundles of enthusiasm to join the Great Daily of the North.
For more than 150 years The Northern Echo has been setting the agenda with hard-hitting investigations and campaigns - and an exciting opportunity has arisen to join our team.
We are looking for journalists who live and breathe digital, understand the needs and pressures of a modern newsroom, can spot news trends and react to them fast, as well as get their teeth into the sorts of campaigns and investigations worthy of our distinguished history.
You will be comfortable running a live blog on breaking incidents as you are peeling back the curtain on the secret, hidden lives of people that have been forgotten about during the pandemic.
To be considered for the Sport role, you’ll be passionate and knowledgeable about all aspects of North-East sport, but in particular you’ll be football crazy and have an in-depth understanding of the North-East football scene and know what makes North-East football fans tick.
One minute you’ll be digging into Newcastle United’s latest transfer targets, the next you will be assessing Neil Warnock’s tactics at Boro or reporting on the Black Cats’ weekend prospects. Either way, you’ll be finding exciting, innovative ways to get to the heart of North-East sport.
You’ll be at home in the world of digital media, and attuned to how to create and publish a story online and optimise its chance of reaching the widest possible audience.
Outstanding trainees (with NCTJ prelims, including shorthand) will be considered alongside senior reporters. A driving licence is essential.
The Northern Echo and its associated titles are thriving with some of the fastest growing digital audiences and strongest circulation figures in the industry – but at our heart is amazing journalism you can trust. This is your chance to play a part in writing the next chapter of our history.
