Regional Sports Editor
Bolton News and Lancashire Telegraph
|Posted: Tue 8 Jan 2019||Closing Date: Fri 18 Jan 2019|
|Employer:||Newsquest North West|
|Employment Type:||Full time|
We are on the hunt for a talented sport editor to join our team in Lancashire – working across four websites, two daily titles and two paid-for weeklies.
You will work with our talented sports journalists at the Bolton News and Lancashire Telegraph, covering the Premier League and EFL as our clubs – Burnley FC, Bolton Wanderers and Blackburn Rovers – strive for success and fight for survival on and off the pitch.
This is an outstanding opportunity.
You’ll need a passion for sport with in-depth knowledge of football at the local and national level, and a desire to drive online growth and lead our print coverage of these leading clubs.
You are joining a winning team – The Lancashire Telegraph and Bolton News boast two of the top performing teams of sports journalists across the group.
We also cover League One and Two teams Accrington Stanley, Bury FC and Oldham as well as non-league and grassroots sports – so you must be able to balance the pressures of covering the big teams alongside everything else to make sure our sports coverage is well-rounded.
- Commission stories informed by what is engaging well online
- Edit sport stories and videos
- Plan and schedule content in print, online and for social media
- Re-shape our print products to drive newspaper sales and online growth
- Lead your team to cover live events and breaking news
- Oversee our titles’ sport social media accounts
- Manage a dedicated team of sports journalists
- Motivate and challenge your team to perform to the top of their potential
- Organise the logistics of shift working/weekend coverage (print & online)/and manage a rota
- Manage a freelance and photographic budget
We are looking for journalists with a great knowledge of sports – but don’t think we will rule you out if you don’t currently work on a sport desk – your experience in print and online journalism is just as important.
The ideal candidate will have at least three years’ experience working in the newsroom or on a sport desk, either as a senior reporter or news/sports/web editor, looking to take the next step. You could work in print, online or broadcast – but importantly, you’ll have the desire to lead and succeed.
You will be at home on social media, understand how to website analytics – e.g. Chartbeat/CrowdTangle/in-house platforms – and be just as comfortable setting up a Facebook live broadcast or launching a new podcast as you would be ripping up the back page of tomorrow’s paper on deadline.
You will need in-depth knowledge of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
You will be NCTJ qualified (or equivalent) with a full clean drivers licence and, as you would expect with sport, this role will involve some weekend and evening working.
Experience of managing staff is desirable but not essential – but the desire to lead a successful team is essential.
