Job Description

Trainee news and trainee sports reporters required at Dorset Echo.

The Dorset Echo has vacancies for both a trainee news reporter and a trainee sports reporter to join the award-winning team based in Weymouth.

We are looking for a talented journalist who is determined to make his or her mark on the profession.

We want someone who can hunt down great off-diary stories, write compelling copy, run a live blog, take a picture and turn their hand to video.

We take training seriously at the Dorset Echo and three of our former trainees have gained editorships in the past few years.

Ideally you will have the NCTJ level 3 Diploma in Journalism.

The successful candidate will work across our print and online titles.

A driving licence is essential.

The Dorset Echo is also looking to recruit a sports reporter.

Hours of work would be a standard 37.5 hours per week, but flexibility of hours is key and includes weekend work.

The primary role would be to report on Weymouth Football Club. However, you would be expected to cover a whole host of sports including rugby, cricket, speedway, hockey, netball, etc.

We are in the lucky position of having the National Sailing Academy in our region so sailing is also covered comprehensively.

Social media plays a vital role in this position and ability to use our website, Twitter, Facebook etc, is essential.

Ideally you would have NCTJ preliminary qualifications.

Salary would depend on experience.

You would be entitled to 25 days’ holiday a year and can enrol in a pension scheme.
