Do you care passionately about your community? Are you prepared to ask tough questions to hold those who govern us to account? Can you champion local causes, entertain and engage our community on locally important issues?
An opportunity has arisen for a full-time, reliable and enthusiastic journalist to join the busy editorial team at The Orcadian.
Our award-winning newspaper has been at the heart of Orkney, serving the community for more than 166 years. Publishing a weekly newspaper, associated website and social media, our busy team works to tight deadlines, striving to offer a diverse range of local news, features and promotions to our loyal readership.
We’re proud to be a commended and relevant regional newspaper, read by two-thirds of Orkney households every week. Our website averages 13,500 views a day and over 18,000 follow us on Facebook — and we’re looking for an experienced, creative individual who will work with us to grow this dedicated readership, and further develop our offerings.
The successful applicant will be a team player, covering a wide range of news, from council meetings and sheriff court proceedings to community events, arts, industry/business, the environment and sport.
Ideal candidates will be sociable, and comfortable conducting interviews with discretion; have excellent writing skills; be web and social media literate, and be comfortable taking the lead on all aspects of social media and digital reporting.
A good knowledge of the local community would be an advantage, as well as a wide and varied interest in current affairs.
An ability to work quickly and accurately to tight deadlines is essential, as are excellent organisational skills, and attention to detail.
A driving licence would be an advantage, and applicants should be willing to take photographs when necessary.
Shorthand at 100wpm would be an asset, but training will be provided if necessary.
Salary shall be dependent on experience. The post comes with an attractive benefits package and we are an employer that supports flexible working.
