Video of convict sprinting away from court goes viral with 7m viewers

A video of a convict sprinting away from a court reporter who questioned him about his involvement in an illegal drug operation has received millions of views online.

Matthew Cleary ran away after Wales Online’s investigations editor Conor Gogarty tried to ask him questions following his conviction outside Cardiff Crown Court.

Property developer Cleary made more than £320,000 from an illegal drug operation but will have to pay back less than a sixth of his ill-gotten gains.

After Conor, pictured, was questioned him outside court about whether he intended to pay back the money, he suddenly decided to sprint away from the building.

Conor tried to pursue the convict to no avail, but still managed to film the 35-year-old Cleary disappearing into the distance.

He posted the resulting video, which can be viewed below, on X and it has subsequently been viewed almost seven million times.

Conor told HTFP: “It’s always nice to see a wide interest in a piece of court reporting.

“I think the 6.9 million views of Matthew Cleary sprinting away from my questions beats the reach of any other video I’ve taken outside court.

“Some saw a funny side to Cleary’s rapid getaway, but by engaging with our coverage a lot of people will also have had an insight into the workings of a cannabis ring and some important issues surrounding that trade.

“That includes how an Albanian national was trafficked and exploited by higher-ups who were not brought to justice — which, as the judge noted, is all too common a scenario.”
