Trainees to divide time between UK and Ireland as publisher creates new jobs

Scott Wood 2021Trainee journalists will divide their time between titles across the UK, Ireland and the Channel Islands as part of a publisher’s scheme that is set to create new jobs.

Tindle Newspapers has announced the launch of a two-year new scheme which will see successful candidates train on the job at different newspapers and radio stations, rather than just being based at a single title.

In the first year, trainees will divide their time into three months each with a newspaper team, Tindle’s digital team, its Irish radio station Midlands 103, and Jersey station Channel 103.

They will then spend the second year of the scheme specialising at one centre.

Tindle Newspapers managing director Scott Wood, pictured, said: “The way journalism is told is changing, and we are proud to be at the forefront of those changes.

“From putting together a news bulletin to writing a front page splash, creating digital-first copy to drive page views, or pitching and recording a podcast, there is no element of journalism we will leave untouched through this unique scheme.”

Tindle says “several” roles will be created through the scheme, although it has yet to specify exactly how many reporters it is set to recruit.

The company says it will help the successful candidates to find accommodation and complete visas each time they have to relocate.

Group digital editor Emily Woolfe said: “This exciting two-year scheme is unique to us, offering a fantastic route into journalism.

“We are offering the opportunity for budding reporters to learn how to produce eye-catching video and content for our websites, sculpt the perfect splash for print and learn all the tools to produce top-quality audio content.

“The digital training part of the scheme is all about innovation, so we will teach you how to interpret analytics to develop story ideas, create articles which engage our audiences and learn how to enhance your content using a variety of audio and visual tools.”
