Society of Editors makes royal reporting key theme of 2023 conference

Camilla TomineyThe future of royal reporting is set to be a key focus of this year’s Society of Editors Conference.

The SoE has revealed this year’s event will take place on 15 March 2023 at the Leonardo Royal Hotel, London City.

Central to the conference will be a debate on royal coverage.

Confirmed speakers include Camilla Tominey, pictured, associate editor covering politics and the royals at the Daily Telegraph, Roya Nikkhah, royal editor at The Sunday Times, Russell Myers, royal editor at the Daily Mirror and Catherine Mayer, journalist and author of the bestselling biography of King Charles III: ‘Charles: The Heart of a King.’

The conference will also include themes on data and demographics, the use of AI, attracting new audiences, adapting content across platforms, local democracy, politics and the media, diversity and inclusion and mental health in the newsroom.

SoE executive director Dawn Alford said: “Following what has been a historic 18 months for the Royal Family, the Society’s annual conference will bring together senior industry figures to discuss the future of royal reporting. Has the public’s appetite for news on the Royal Family changed?

“How should momentous events be covered moving forward and what should the relationship between the media and the institution look like in the years to come?”

The event will also include an editors’ panel featuring representatives from the national, regional and broadcast sectors.

They will discuss the media landscape, coverage of the biggest news stories and combating threats to journalism.

More speakers and a programme will be announced in the coming days.
