New category for regional titles added to Media Freedom Awards

A new category specifically for regional titles has been added to an awards scheme run by the Society of Editors.

Entries are now being welcomed for the Media Freedom Awards 2023, which were held for the first time last year.

This year’s awards will feature a Regional News Media Organisation of the Year to be given to an outlet that has “held power to account, championed the freedoms or rights of others and demonstrated a commitment to promoting media freedom”.

Judges will consider overall coverage, campaigns and investigations and evidence of any tangible impact that coverage has had.

Conor Matchett Award

Three specific categories aimed at regional titles – Campaign of the Year, Investigation of the Year and Journalist of the Year – have also been retained from last year’s scheme.

The Scotsman’s Conor Matchett, pictured, triumphed in the Journalist of the Year category for his work on investigations into care home deaths during Covid-19 and “a questionable deal involving a smelter and hydroplant”.

Portsmouth daily The News won Campaign of the Year for its bid to stop the construction of cross-Channel power cable Aquind, which critics say would cause “havoc” in the city and threaten the local environment.

Belfast’s Sunday Life was awarded Investigation of the Year for its probe into South East Antrim UDA.

This year’s awards will culminate with a ceremony at the iconic Banking Hall in London on 8 November.
