Evening event to highlight opportunities for women in journalism

Alison PhillipsFemale writers and prospective journalists are being invited to attend a presentation evening aimed at highlighting opportunities for women in the industry.

The event, on Tuesday, 7 February, has been organised by Women in Journalism, the group founded by Eve Pollard 29 years ago that provides guidance and support for its members in publishing.

It is supported by The School of Media and Communication and the University of Leeds, which will host the meeting in its Rupert Beckett Lecture Theatre.

Chaired by WiJ chair and Daily Mirror editor Alison Phillips, it will feature prominent journalists Rozina Breen, editor-in-chief of the Bureau of Investigative Journalism, Channel 4 commissioning editor Joanna Potts, City World publisher Laura Collins and Reach’s online safety officer Rebecca Whittington.

Alison, who started out in journalism at the Harlow Star before studying at the University of Leeds, will also give a talk to students about scoops, show business and sourcing the news.

“It is extremely exciting to have Alison back on campus,” said Kate Watkins, associate professor in journalism and director of TV news training at the School of Media. “As a Leeds graduate, Alison’s work is an inspiration for students and journalists alike.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for guests to gain insight into the profession and hear from a panel with such varied paths to success.”
