Editor hails ‘incredible’ team as daily bids for awards quadruple

Andrew Colley newA regional daily’s editor has hailed his “incredibly talented” journalists as they prepare to compete for four industry awards.

Andrew Colley has praised the editorial staff at the Oxford Mail, which has recently been bolstered with four new recruits.

Andrew’s praise comes after it was revealed earlier this week that the Mail will be competing for Regional Daily Newspaper of the Year at the Newspaper Awards, while its Newsquest sister weekly the Oxford Times is up for Local Weekly Newspaper of the Year.

The company’s Oxford-based print centre was also recognised with a nomination for Regional Newspaper Printer of the Year, while the Mail further features on the News Brand of the Year (Large) shortlist at the forthcoming Regional Press Awards.

Andrew, who became Newsquest’s regional editor for Oxfordshire in 2021, said: “We’ve worked hard to structure our newsroom to ensure we’re delivering content when readers want and need it.

“We’ve brought in some incredibly talented people and I’m really thankful to everyone – past and present – who has been on the journey to get to this point.

“I was lucky to join the team in a good place, following on from the great work of my predecessor Pete Gavan who was a fantastic colleague.”

He added: “We’re proud that our historic titles have got an incredibly strong and loyal readership. The Oxford Mail reaches 79% of adults in Oxford and more than 394,000 adults each month.

“The titles have gone through a lot of change in the last 14, 15 months but at our heart the need to inform and entertain our readers has never wavered.

“Our titles remain the go-to place for news in the county and we are now run like a 24-7 operation, planning content for when readers are engaging online and utilising the knowledge of our print production team to see the papers continue to excel.”
