Daily to get its own editor for first time in four years

Diarmuid McDonaghA regional daily is set to get its own dedicated editor for the first time in four years.

Newsquest is currently recruiting for an editor for the Bournemouth Echo, with the preferred candidate requiring “strong experience of working in the regional press”.

The Echo last had its own individual editor in 2019 when Andy Martin stepped down after four years in charge.

Southern Daily Echo editor Gordon Sutter then added the Bournemouth daily to his portfolio until 2021, when he retired.

Gordon’s departure prompted an editorial shake-up at Newsquest’s south coast titles, with Weymouth-based Dorset Echo chief Diarmuid MacDonagh, pictured, being promoted to regional group editor overseeing all three dailies.

The Southampton-based Southern Daily Echo then regained its own editor at the start of last year in the form of Ben Fishwick.

Like Ben, the successful candidate in Bournemouth will report to Diarmuid.

A Newsquest spokesman said: “Diarmuid is still staying and retaining his overarching group editor for Dorset role – now with an editor for Bournemouth reporting into him.”
