Daily editor takes up new social justice charity role

Gavin ThompsonA regional daily has taken up a new role with a charity devoted to social justice on his patch.

South Wales Argus editor Gavin Thompson has been unveiled as the new chair of the Bevan Foundation’s board of trustees, a role he will undertake on a voluntary basis in addition to his duties with the Newport-based newspaper.

The charity was founded in 2001 to strengthen public policy after Welsh devolution and is named for Aneurin Bevan, founder of the NHS.

Gavin, pictured, takes over from Vivienne Sugar, who has stepped down after more than eight years as chair.

He said: “The problems that the foundation tackles are faced by many people in the communities our newspapers serve, so this voluntary role feels a good fit with my day job as editor of trusted local news titles.

“Our local publications stand up for people without a voice and seek to work cross-party to make our communities better.

“That matches the foundation’s non-party political approach and mission to find practical solutions to improve people’s lives in Wales.”
