Daily considers leaving historic home as redevelopment touted

A regional daily has confirmed it is considering leaving its historic home with redevelopment of the site potentially on the cards.

Wolverhampton’s Express & Star says it is “considering various options” for the Queen Street building, where it has been based since at least the 1880s, after it was highlighted as a potential investment opportunity in a prospectus published by the City of Wolverhampton Council.

Queen Street, pictured, also serves as the headquarters for the Express & Star’s publisher the Midland News Association.

MNA managing director Matt Ross confirmed the company is now looking at the building’s future.

He told HTFP: “For a number of years we have been exploring opportunities surrounding our historic Express & Star offices in the heart of Wolverhampton.

“After removing the printing presses from the site and restructuring our departments we now have significant spare capacity available and so are looking at the various options available to us, be that redeveloping the current site or exiting the building altogether.”

The City of Wolverhampton Council’s investment prospectus states: “A number of development options could be brought forward, including the wholescale repurposing of the Express & Star offices on Queen Street, as well as new development on the wider estate.

“There is also potential to increase the site to one hectare in scale through land assembly of the adjacent NCP car park, which has periodically been promoted to the market.”
