Nicola Sturgeon: How the Scottish dailies covered her shock resignation

The shock resignation of First Minister Nicola Sturgeon provided Scotland’s daily newspapers with their biggest story for years today.

Ms Sturgeon announced yesterday morning that she would be stepping down from the role after eight years in charge of the Scottish National Party.

At a press conference in Edinburgh, she told assembled journalists that “in my head and in my heart I know that the time is now”.

The quote provided a front page headline for both The Scotsman and the Press and Journal, who both depicted Ms Sturgeon peering out from behind a curtain albeit from different angles.

Pro-Scottish independence daily The National showed the outgoing SNP leader in front of an image of a crowd waving Saint Andrew’s Cross flags.

And its Glasgow-based Newsquest sister daily The Herald opted to use another quote from her resignation speech: “I am a human being as well as a politician.”
