UK-wide bid to challenge Johnson’s law-breaking targets regional press

A nationwide campaign aimed at challenging Boris Johnson’s law-breaking has been launched via regional press front pages.

Pressure group 38 Degrees has run advertisements across the covers of five different regional dailies this morning in a bid to get readers to demand higher standards from those in high office.

The adverts feature a mosaic made up of the faces of those who have come forward to share their experiences of how they were affected by the coronavirus lockdowns.

Put together, they show an image of the Prime Minister raising a toast at one of the illegal ‘Partygate’ gatherings he attended in Downing Street during the pandemic.

The ads, which encourage others to come forward with their own experiences, were run by the Cambridge News, Derby Telegraph, Northern Echo, Western Morning News and Yorkshire Post today.

38 Degrees describes itself as a “progressive, not for profit organisation which campaigns for a fairer, more sustainable and more respectful country”.

The group’s strategic director Ellie Gellard told HTFP: “The pain, anger and hurt that was caused by news and pictures of the PM and senior advisers drinking, while we stayed home to save lives, is palpable.

“Opinion polling shows that the British public are not ready to ‘move on’. And 38 Degrees supporters from right across the country are telling us the very same.

“So, instead of leaving that public anger and hurt to fester, 38 Degrees is campaigning to make sure the British public have a way of making their voices – and their stories – heard by those who can hold our lawmakers, turned lawbreakers, to account.

“Today, that looks like wraps of regional papers across the UK – from the Yorkshire Post and the Northern Echo, to the Western Morning News and the Derby Telegraph. We want to reach into local communities across the country who have stories we should hear.”

38 Degrees is encouraging those interested in the campaign to log on to NotLikeMyLockdown.com to “join the campaign aimed at holding our lawmakers, turned lawbreakers, to account”.

Ellie added: “We’re also using money we’ve raised for this campaign -through individual donations from members of the public – to help support regional journalism, which is a vital part of the democracy we at 38 Degrees campaign to protect.

“We’re thrilled to do so today.”
