Sports clubs share daily’s front page as patch prepares to descend on London

Two sports clubs shared a regional daily’s front page after booking final visits to London for the same weekend.

The Huddersfield Daily Examiner celebrated the achievements of both Huddersfield Town AFC and the Huddersfield Giants rugby league side on its cover.

The split splash came after the Giants defeated Hull Kingston Rovers earlier this month to reach the Challenge Cup final, which will be played at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday 28 May.

The following day, Town will contest for a place in football’s Premier League at Wembley Stadium when they face Nottingham Forest in the Championship play-off final.

Their berth in that match was confirmed after victory over Luton Town in the semi-final on Monday night.

The Examiner ran the celebratory splash yesterday, pictured above.

In a piece about Town’s achievement, football writer Steven Chicken wrote: “The final whistle at the John Smith’s Stadium was marked by a flood of supporters onto the pitch to join their heroes in celebrations that will be felt for the next week-and-a-half.

“The throng of blue and white humanity that poured onto the pitch at the John Smith’s Stadium upon the final whistle of their play-off semi-final was not just a celebration: it was an exorcism.”

He added: “For the next 11 days, Huddersfield Town fans can keep riding that euphoria into their offices, schools, pubs and playgrounds.

“And then… they get to see if their side can deliver one final win to top even this one.”
