Reporter leaves local paper to take up national sporting role

Liam HeaddA sports reporter has said farewell to an independent weekly as he takes up a new national role.

Senior sports reporter Liam Headd has announced his departure from the Newbury Weekly News as he prepares to join the Racing Post in a trainee role.

Liam, pictured, has worked for the Weekly News for four years.

He revealed his new job in a post on Twitter earlier this month.

Speaking to HTFP, Liam said: “I am very sad to be leaving the Newbury Weekly News after four incredible years with the team.

“Since I arrived in 2018, everyone has been so supportive and they have played a huge part in my journalism career.

“I have enjoyed covering a variety of sport in West Berkshire and had the pleasure of reporting on events at Wembley Stadium, Alexandra Palace and the Cheltenham Festival, and I am going to miss the wonderful team in Newbury.

“With that being said, I am delighted to be joining the Racing Post team and looking forward to working alongside the very best in the racing industry.”

Weekly News editor Andy Murrill congratulated Liam on his new job.

He posted on Twitter: “You’ve done such a brilliant job here Liam.

“You’re a star, on and off the pitch.”
