Publisher offers ad-free reading in bid to attract more subscribers

Sam SheddenA regional publisher has launched a fresh attempt to attract more subscribers to its websites with a new ‘advertisement-free’ offering.

JPIMedia has unveiled the measure amid a raft of changes to be introduced across its portfolio of regional news titles online.

Subscribers to JPI websites’ ‘Digital+’ option will now get access to the ad-free news articles, as well as the current benefit of having access to a newspaper e-edition too.

The move has been implemented at the Edinburgh Evening News and Yorkshire Post, but JPI is also set to introduce the feature across its entire network at a later date.

The change was unveiled in a series of Twitter posts by JPI group subscription and registration editor Sam Shedden this afternoon.

Sam, pictured, wrote: “We already offer subscribers 70pc fewer ads than non-paying customers but now those on Digital+ subscriptions will enjoy an ad-free experience when signed in to the website and reading an article.

“In an effort to declutter our websites we’ve drastically reduced the amount of marketing messages during the user journey.”

‘Digital+’ subscribers to the Leeds-based Post pay £12.99 per month for the additional features, compared to £11.99 for a standard digital package that does not include the ad-free pages. At the EEN, the monthly price increases from £9.49 to £10.99.

Sam went on to reveal new discounts will also be available to all digital subscribers with a range of JPI’s commercial partners, adding “reduced in-article messaging” is also set to be introduced.

He further pledged “significant” upgrades to JPI’s apps, an expansion of its premium content offering, more loyalty rewards and better subscriber analytics.
