Plan to demolish daily’s former home revealed

A regional daily’s former office could be bulldozed as part of plans to build a new industrial site.

An application to demolish Newspaper House, the old headquarters of the Southern Daily Echo, has been submitted to Southampton City Council.

The Echo was based at Newspaper House from 1997, when the development was built for Southern Newspapers, until just before the first coronavirus lockdown in 2020.

The newspaper is now based at the Quay, in Ocean Village, overlooking Southampton’s marina.

According to the Echo, the plans for Newspaper House were submitted by Salmon Development Limited, which wants to redevelop the site.

If approved, the former printworks, office building and associated service buildings will be demolished.

The proposals outline plans for three buildings for general industrial use, or storage and distribution.

It will include associated access, parking and landscape and infrastructure works.
