Memorial fund for regional journalist wound up after two decades

Terry CollinA fund set up in a regional journalist’s memory has been wound up after providing more than £30,000 to help disabled sportspeople.

The Terry Collin Fund has made the announcement after two decades of offering money to help disabled people pursue their chosen sport.

The project was set up 20 years ago by the family of Terry Collin, who died suddenly at his home in 2002 aged 59.

Terry, pictured, had worked as a sports reporter with the Bridport News and the Dorset Echo prior to his death.

The fund was subsequently launched by his sisters Heather, Mary and Anna to help athletes with travel, training and equipment costs

Notable recipients over the years included Paralympic gold medal winner Paul Blake, while 11 times gold medal-winning Paralympian Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson and double Olympic gold medallist rower James Cracknell were among the fund’s patrons.

The fund’s final grant of £5,357 has been given to Beaminster Cricket Club, which has a policy for supporting disabled youngsters.

A memorial match featuring the club’s youth squad will also be played next month, with Anna presenting a cup to the winner.

Fund chairman Heather told the Echo: “We know that Terry would be delighted to know that so many wellwishers have supported a cause that he held so dear.

“The help and backing we have received from so many clubs and other sources has been a great inspiration to us. The local organisations and some very caring people have been tremendous. We thank everybody so much.”
