Independent publisher launches fourth print title via crowdfunding

A local publisher which already runs three print titles has expanded into a fourth area after a successful crowdfuding appeal.

Peculiar Publications has announced the launch of the Camberwell Clarion, which will have a circulation of 15,000 across the SE5, SE15 and SE22 postcode areas of London.

The Clarion’s launch comes after a crowdfunding bid in which 165 backers pledged more than £7,500 to begin production of the newspaper.

The free title will be stocked in more than 150 locations across its circulation area and will be produced entirely by a team of freelancers.

Camberwell Clarion

It is Peculiar’s fourth launch in London after the Peckham Peculiar in January 2014, Dulwich Diverter in May 2016 and Lewisham Ledger in June 2018.

All three were also launched following successful crowdfunding appeals.

The Clarion will initially be published every two months and its first edition was released on 22 February.

Co-founder and co-editor Mark McGinlay told HTFP: “The new paper has had a great response from both readers and local businesses.

“Many of our advertisers for the next issue are stockists who have seen people come into their shop or pub to pick up the first edition.

“We feel the paper really reflects the local area by having unique stories and interviews that are 100 per cent about Camberwell and its people.

“This is very much the key to its success.”
