Killer parents erased from coverage as daily recalls children’s fire deaths

A regional daily erased the names of two killer parents from its coverage as it focused on remembering the deaths of their six children 10 years on.

The Derby Telegraph has commemorated a decade since the deaths of Duwayne, Jade, John, Jack, Jesse and Jayden Philpott in a house fire started by their parents Mick and Mairead Philpott, as well as accomplice Paul Mosley.

The surviving Philpotts and Mosley were all convicted of manslaughter for starting the fatal fire in Victory Road, Derby, in a bid to frame Mick’s former mistress Lisa Willis.

The perpetrators’ names were removed from the Telegraph’s coverage marking a decade since the killings after the newspaper chose to honour their victims yesterday.

The coverage was led by court reporter Martin Naylor, who covered the trial at the time, while the Telegraph’s front page, pictured above, showed six candles representing each of the dead children.

Editor Natalie Fahy told HTFP yesterday: “The Philpott fire was a huge tragedy and is something that has stayed with everyone who calls Derby home.

“We wanted to remember what happened that night with a simple front page and reflect how people still feel the pain of it.

“The families in Victory Road will never forget what happened to Duwayne, Jade, John, Jack, Jesse and Jayden on that awful night and neither will we.

“We decided we didn’t want this day to be about the perpetrators and their crimes, so we haven’t mentioned their names in any stories we’ve published today.”
