Struggle to attract ‘right talent’ sparks video recruitment drive

A regional publisher has launched a new video recruitment drive after admitting that publishers are finding it “increasingly hard to attract the right talent”.

Archant has produced the series of videos that showcase editors and journalists talking about their roles and what it is like to work for the company.

Those appearing in the series include Richard, pictured, East Anglian Daily Times editor Brad Jones, live desk Editor Jess Long and apprentice Tamika Green.

The firm is currently recruiting for a series of roles including editor of the Ipswich Star, which is being advertised on HTFP here.

Archant currently offers a £1,000 signing-on bonus to journalists joining its titles, as well as an internal ‘refer a friend’ scheme.

In a statement publicising the recruitment drive, Archant said it had decided to take “a different approach” and claimed “many publishers are finding it increasingly hard to attract the right talent to their newsrooms”.

Archant editor-in-chief Jeremy Clifford said: “We are a publishing company that is trying to do many things differently from the larger publishers. And with the amount of noise in the recruitment market, we wanted to find a new way to get our voice heard.

“There is nothing more authentic than journalists talking to other journalists and potential journalists about their work and what it is like to work for Archant.”

“We are about to embark on an exciting strategy that will see us launch paid-for apps alongside our websites, as we move to a paid-for subscription-based model.

“The apps are beautifully designed and a brilliant platform to showcase our work. So we hope journalists will see that what we are doing is about putting a real focus on quality reporting.”

Tom Kay, the publisher’s director of engagement, communication and learning & development, added: “The roles at Archant are diverse and dynamic.

“Utilising video and putting our own people centre stage really brings these opportunities to life and showcases the passion of our journalists and the excitement of working in our digital-first newsrooms.”

In November, Richard Porritt, editor of Archant daily the Norwich Evening News, launched a rallying call to journalists to move to the East of England after telling HTFP the region has “historically struggled” to attract talent.
