Footballer thanks fans with farewell local press ad

A footballer took out a full page advertisement in a local newspaper to say farewell to readers after 11 years.

Ben Mee paid for the advert in the Burnley Express as he prepared to leave Burnley FC following the expiration of his contract.

Mr Mee had played for the club since 2011 but is now seeking a new team following the decision, which comes after Burnley, nicknamed ‘The Clarets’, were relegated from the Premier League last month.

In the ad, pictured below, he thanked the club’s staff and his teammates, as well as supporters for their “passion, devotion and spirit”.

Express sports editor Chris Boden told HTFP: “I’ve been at the Burnley Express for 28 years and have spoken to many players when they have moved on, but I’ve never known one to use their own money to thank the fans.

“But that sums up Ben, from a shy 21-year-old lad who arrived, initially on loan, from Manchester City under Eddie Howe in 2011, he became a real leader and voice, not just in terms of the game, but wider issues as well.

“I’m sure all Clarets fans wish him well wherever he ends up next.”
