First regional press speaker added to editors’ conference line-up

Luke JacobsThe Society of Editors has unveiled the first speaker from the regional press for its forthcoming conference.

Luke Jacobs, Reach plc’s regional editor for the South East and new audiences editor, will join a panel discussing diversity and inclusion during the event.

Luke, pictured, joins the panel alongside Daily Mirror editor Alison Phillips, Joseph Harker, senior editor for diversity & development at The Guardian, and Shelley Bishton, head of creative Diversity for News UK.

The SoE has also announced Becky Clay, head of invention at Reach, will also join a discussion looking at the future of paid-for content, platform payments and paywalls.

Martin Breen, president of the Society of Editors and deputy editor-in-chief at the Belfast Telegraph and Sunday Life, said: “We are delighted that so many distinguished journalists from all sectors of the UK media have agreed to join us at our first in-person conference since 2019.

“The conference is a vital forum for the industry to debate and discuss the opportunities for the UK media and I have no doubt that next month’s event will provide a forum for insightful discussions that will translate into practical ideas to take back to newsrooms.”

Other speakers ahead to the programme include the BBC’s digital director Naja Nielsen, Jasper Fulcher, the Telegraph’s head of daily visual production, and Ian Birrell, contributing editor for foreign reporting and investigations at The Mail on Sunday.

The one-day conference will take place on Wednesday 11 May 2022 at Mary Ward House, in London.

Day delegate prices are £150 + VAT for SoE members and £160 + VAT for non-members.

The organisation will not be providing accommodation but it has secured a delegate room rate at the nearby Hilton at London Euston.
