Editorial boss quits publisher after seven years in senior roles

Jon BirchallAn editorial boss who has served in several senior roles at a regional publisher has announced his departure.

Jon Birchall, left, began his most recent role at Reach plc as audience and content director for future audiences in January.

He revealed in a Twitter post that he will be leaving the company for “something new” but has not said what that will be.

However HTFP understands Jon will be taking up a new role with Manchester-based digital publishing group LadBible, which also has offices in Australia and New Zealand.

Jon wrote: “So after nearly seven years today was my last day working with Reach before I move on to something new next month.

“There are genuinely too many people to thank in one tweet but I’ve been blessed to work with remarkable people and for that I’m eternally grateful.  It has been a joy.”

Jon joined Reach predecessor Trinity Mirror in 2015 as sport editor with responsibility for digital innovation, having previously worked for football website Goal.com and Manchester United Football Club.

Based in Liverpool, he served as head of sport for the publisher’s regional titles between 2015 and 2020.

Jon then became an audience and content director with responsibility for sport following a Reach restructure in 2020.

He held that post before moving to his more recent position in January this year.

LADbible’s social media platforms and websites attract almost 69m unique visitors every month with brands including LADbible, UNILAD, GAMINGbible, SPORTbible and Tyla.

HTFP has approached Reach for information on Jon’s replacement.
