Daily wades into street controversy with online poll

A regional daily set out to settle a pedestrianisation controversy with an online poll.

The Aberdeen Evening Express ran the survey on the city’s Union Street on a debate about whether to reopen the central section of the road to buses and taxis.

Aberdeen City Council’s ruling administration claimed a survey showed “thousands” of people wanted the street pedestrianised.

But the Evening Express poll showed this was not the majority view, with the results of its own survey showing most readers wanted traffic to return to Union Street “for good”.

The results were published on Saturday’s front page, pictured above.

An accompanying editorial read: “In the aftermath of the heated debate in the council chambers, we launched our poll to gain some indication of how Aberdonians feel…

“And the results, though unofficial, are decisive. About 200 more people say they want traffic back on the street ‘for good’, with 785 votes compared to 560.”

The council has yet to respond to the results of the poll.
