Daily runs eight-page special in honour of ‘true titan’ of journalism

A regional daily ran an eight-page special supplement to mark the funeral of a “true titan” of journalism on its patch.

The Nottingham Post published the pullout as football reporter Colin Slater was laid to rest following his death aged 87.

Colin began his career on local newspapers before becoming Notts County reporter on the Nottingham Evening News, prior to its merger with the Nottingham Post.

He later moved to become Notts County correspondent for BBC Radio Nottingham in 1968.

The Post splashed on his death on 11 January and the funeral supplement appeared in Monday’s edition.

Writing in the supplement, Post Notts County writer Leigh Curtis said: “He lived an extraordinary life chronicling the drama of the club he adored, during which there have been many memories and tales of a true titan of the airwaves.

“For nearly 50 years, he beautifully illustrated matches to listeners on BBC Nottingham with a voice so recognisable that it never needed an introduction.

“He was a master of painting what he could see into words when fans hurriedly tuned in to hear him eloquently detail the fate of Notts on Saturday afternoons.”

Leigh added: “As a journalist, he would never be afraid to ask tough questions, but it was always in a way that never cost him respect by those at the centre of his probing.

“One of the finest commentators of his generation, John Motson, described him as a ‘doyen of the broadcasting industry’ which merely underlined the admiration of his colleagues.”
