Daily issues front page cost-of-living plea to Boris Johnson

A regional daily has issued a front page plea to Boris Johnson to help readers hit by the cost-of-living crisis.

The Bradford Telegraph & Argus has called for intervention from Westminster after a special report into the issue by reporter Dave Jagger.

The Telegraph & Argus splashed on its plea yesterday morning, pictured below.

It comes after the T&A was among the regional newspapers to voice their displeasure at the UK Government’s Integrated Rail Plan in November.

Editor Nigel Burton told HTFP: “The Prime Minister promised to ‘level up’ Bradford by green-lighting an ambitious rail infrastructure programme that would have included a new station linking the city with York, Leeds and Manchester. Those plans were unceremoniously dumped before Christmas.

“And while Downing Street partied, people in Bradford wondered if they could afford to feed their children and keep warm.

“Our reporter Dave Jagger spent time working in a food bank to meet the people who are already facing a cost-of-living crisis.

“Among them was a man who has to boil a kettle to when he wants to wash because he can’t afford to run a bath. How is this levelling up?

“Over the coming months we plan to lift the veil on how people in our district are coping – or not coping – with the soaring cost of food and energy.

“And we won’t stop calling on the Government to help.”

A spokesperson for the Department of Work and Pensions told the T&A: “We’re providing support worth around £12bn this financial year and next to help families with the cost of living.

“We’re cutting the Universal Credit taper to make sure work pays, providing targeted support to help households with their energy bills and have a comprehensive childcare offer in place for working parents.

“Our £500m Household Support Fund is helping the most vulnerable with essential costs this winter, and councils have also been given an extra £65m to support low income households with rent arrears.”
