Award-winning student newspaper celebrates 90th anniversary

An award-winning student newspaper has celebrated 90 years in publication.

The Glasgow Guardian, the official student newspaper of the University of Glasgow, has marked nine decades of what it called “ambitious, creative and innovative student journalism.”

The Guardian was founded as the Gilmorehill Globe on 10 October 1932 and later became the Glasgow University Guardian in 1959.

The Guardian, whose alumni include former Sunday Times editor Andrew Neil, settled on its current name in 2011.

In a Twitter thread published on Monday, the Guardian said: “Today marks the official 90th birthday of The Glasgow Guardian.

“On this day in 1932, the Gilmorehill Globe was created at UofG, and thus began 90 long years of ambitious, creative and innovative student journalism.

“Today, in 2022, The Glasgow Guardian is a multi-award-winning student publication with a thriving team of editors and contributors.

“In our 90 years of publishing we’ve broken countless exclusive stories and remained relentlessly committed to representing our student population.”
