Victory ‘in grasp’ for weekly’s bid to save historic building

Victory appears to be “in grasp” for a weekly newspaper’s campaign to save a historic building on its patch.

The West Sussex County Times has welcomed a proposal to secure the future of Horsham’s Drill Hall, which was threatened with demolition last year.

HTFP reported in January 2020 how the County Times was fighting to stop the building from being replaced by housing.

Now the paper has revealed the Drill Hall could be handed over to the town’s branch of the Royal British Legion to run.

The plan provided a splash for the County Times last week, pictured above, ahead of a meeting about the issue tonight.

Editor Gina Stainer told HTFP: “We are delighted that a positive outcome now seems in grasp which will secure the future of the historic Drill Hall for Horsham’s community.

“When we first reported that it was under threat there was a huge outcry from the very many people in our town who feel strongly that it is an asset for the people which must be preserved.

“Our campaign to Save the Drill Hall helped give a voice to the groups who rely on the hall and who had not been consulted on its future at that stage.

“We very much hope this new proposal to hand the hall to the Royal British Legion will be given the backing of the council, and that it can continue to be used for the benefit of local people for many more years to come.”
