Trainer emphasises importance of shorthand after taking new NCTJ role

Sam CooperA journalism trainer has emphasised the importance of shorthand after taking a new role with the National Council for the Training of Journalists.

Sam Cooper, pictured, has confirmed his appointment to the NCTJ’s shorthand board.

Sam is journalism course leader at Sheffield College and previously worked on the newsdesk at Sheffield daily The Star.

Announcing his appointment, Sam said the importance of shorthand had been made “more prominent” by the rise of digital journalism.

Posting on Twitter, he said: I am pleased to say I am delighted to join the NCTJ shorthand board and play a part in emphasising what an important skill it really is.

“Its importance has only been made more prominent with the rapid growth in digital. Speed should never come at the expense of accuracy and that’s where shorthand comes in.”

Speaking to HTFP, he said: “Shorthand will always be an absolutely vital skill to any reporter. The rise and growth of digital has meant it’s never been more important to be first but speed should never come at the expense of accuracy and that’s where shorthand comes in.

“Nothing will ever replace the telephone, notebook and an accurate shorthand note. I look forward to playing a part in emphasising what a crucial skill it is.”

In November, Sam spoke up for the importance of shorthand during the Society of Editors Virtual Conference.

He told a debate on training: “What separates us from the rumour mill, from user generated content, from community journalism – it’s accuracy, and what we have to balance that against is speed, is being fast.

“Shorthand plays a big part in the speed side of that balancing argument.”

HTFP has approached the NCTJ for further comment.
