Tens of thousands raised for charity in honour of journalist with leukaemia

Geoff HillThe brothers-in-law of a former regional journalist with leukaemia are running hundreds of miles for charity in support of him.

Ex-Southwark News deputy editor Geoff Hill, pictured, has been living with cancer after initially becoming unwell four years ago.

Now Geoff’s two brothers-in-law, Lee Roberts and Jordan Smith, are running 460 km, the length of London to Paris, for the charity Cure Leukaemia and have so far raised more than £23,000 in sponsorship.

The run is being supported by Crystal Palace Football Club and is dubbed the ‘Palace to Paris’ challenge, although the pair are running 15km every day around South London.

Geoff has previously undergone biopsies, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, a bone marrow transplant, a stem cell transplant and a month fighting sepsis in hospital – only to discover that his cancer had returned.

According to the News, he is “hopeful, but also realistic, about pulling through”.

Currently, he is having top-up chemotherapy treatments and believes his best chance is to take part in a clinical trial for a new treatment at UCLH, called CAR-T cell therapy.

The treatment involves harvesting T-cells from the immune system, adapting them and then putting them back in the body ton fight the disease.

Geoff said: “I have been blessed with the most amazing family and friends who have rallied around me in a way I have found humbling and overwhelming.

“I would not be here today if it wasn’t for them.

“Their strength and support has kept me positive, and together we are as determined as ever to find that way out.”
