Regional press cartoonist dies days after celebrating 90th birthday

Terry ShelbourneA regional press cartoonist who worked for a weekly newspaper until recently has died aged 90.

Tributes have been paid to Terry Shelbourne, who continued to draw cartoons for the Grantham Journal into his late 80s.

Terry, pictured, had continued to visit the Journal’s offices each week until he was unable to do so due to the coronavirus pandemic.

He had become ill in September and died at Lincoln County Hospital on Boxing Day – just a few days after celebrating his 90th birthday.

Journal editor Marie Bond said: “There are very few well-known people in the town who have not featured in the Journal as a caricature.

The Journal team is devastated to lose Terry – he was part of the Journal family.

“Every Tuesday Terry would come into the office with a cheery ‘morning guys and gals’, and these visits have been very much missed since the Covid pandemic started.  We will miss him dearly.”

South Kesteven District Council member Ian Selby told the Journal Terry was a “Grantham icon”.

He said: “Such a wonderful artist. It was his life’s passion. He produced some stunning artwork and caricatures of practically all of the town’s well-known folk for the Grantham Journal over many years.”

Terry is survived by wife Celia and daughter Kate.
