Regional daily’s first foreign editor dies aged 71

Jonathan YoungA regional daily’s first foreign editor who continued writing for his local newspaper in retirement has died aged 71.

Tributes have been paid to Jonathan Young, who spent 23 years with the Yorkshire Post.

During his time at the Leeds-based daily, Jonathan took on the foreign editor role.

He was an active member of the National Union of Journalists, including periods spent on the Provincial Newspapers Industrial Council.

Jonathan, pictured, later returned to his native Isle of Wight and was a columnist for the Isle of Wight County Press.

He also served as a parish councillor on the island, first in Niton, and then in Freshwater.

County Press editor Alan Marriott said: “Jon was a credit to his profession; tenacious, accurate and fair.

“His columns shed more light than heat on matters national than local and his tips brought in many stories. He will be missed by all at the CP.”

Jonathan is survived by his widow Janice and a daughter.
