Newspaper launches Christmas book drive for foodbank-reliant families

A newspaper is calling on readers to give children the gift of a new book this Christmas.

Scotland on Sunday has launched the campaign, which aims to gift books to families who are reliant on foodbanks.

The campaign is being run with the Scottish Book Trust.

Those lending their support to the drive include author Julia Donaldson, illustrator Axel Scheffler and Macmillan Children’s Books.

Scottish crime writer Val McDermid has also supported the campaign, and her backing appeared on the front page of the Edinburgh-based title on Sunday, pictured below.

Posting on Twitter, editor Catherine Salmond wrote: “The team is really passionate about this year’s Christmas campaign.

“New books for Scottish children – the gift of a beautiful story, mesmerising illustrations, a chance to escape, to think, enjoy and laugh.

“Every child in Scotland deserves this.

“Please give your support.”
