Newsagents praise publisher over handling of price rises

Newsagents have praised a regional publisher over its handling of a series of cover price increases it is set to implement.

The Federation of Independent Retailers has welcomed a commitment by JPIMedia to include pro-rata profit margins for retailers as part of the move.

According to the newsagents’ trade body, which is also known as the NFRN, the price of JPIMedia-owned dailies The Gazette, in Blackpool, and the Lancashire Post will go up by 10p per copy from this coming Monday.

A 5p increase is also set to be implemented at 11 weeklies across Lancashire and four weekly titles in Yorkshire, the NFRN says.

NFRN head of news and Connect Brian Murphy said: “We would like to acknowledge that JPIMedia has also chosen the correct route for maintaining retailer support of its publications, and we welcome a continued close working relationship with them.”

The move comes amid an ongoing dispute over margins between the NFRN and Newsquest.

The two parties held “frank and open” talks over the issue last week.

HTFP has approached JPIMedia for a comment.
