New title runs second print edition ahead of election

A regional news title has run a special print edition ahead of the forthcoming elections.

The National Wales has run a Senedd election special, pictured below, marking the second time the title has appeared in print.

The National Wales was launched by Newsquest on 1 March to cover the whole of Wales.

Primarily a digital service, its first print edition was published on the day of its launch.

Speaking to HTFP, editor Gavin Thompson: “The first edition of The National was so well received that we knew we needed to print a second.

“We’ve timed it at a month before Wales goes to the polls to elect a new government.

“Helping to better inform the public is part of our mission so we’ve made this an election special with unapologetic deep dives into policy issues such as poverty and inequality, the environment and rural affairs, and the Welsh language and culture.

“Our small team has done a great job, supported by some excellent freelance contributors, all without detracting from the quality of our online output, where we’ve now passed 500 digital subscribers.”

Gavin has previously pledged to hire a dedicated political correspondent for the title once subscriptions reach the 1,000 mark.

Elections are taking place on 6 May for the Scottish Parliament, the Welsh Senedd, English county councils and English police and crime commissioners.
