New editor unveiled at weeklies after co-founder’s death

Richard Osley 1A new editor has been unveiled at two sister weeklies after the death of their co-founder.

Deputy editor Richard Osley has stepped up at the Camden New Journal and Islington Tribune, whose founding editor Eric Gordon died earlier this month aged 89.

Richard, pictured, has worked at the New Journal for 20 of its 38 years in business.

His appointment was “supported by the staff and endorsed by Eric before his death”, according to the New Journal.

Richard said: “As people will have read in the many tributes over the last couple of weeks, Eric was a fantastic mentor to generations of reporters, including myself.

“This is partly why the New Journal has several members of staff across all departments who have put years into the paper.

“This is not a one-man band, there is a group of people working to carry on the principles and values of the paper.

“Despite the most challenging times for our industry, everybody from the newsroom to production, sales, distribution – the deliverers on the streets every Thursday – wants to continue what Eric started and believed in: a challenging, entertaining independent local newspaper which sees its readers as the real boss.”

Eric, who had also edited the Tribune since it was founded in 2003, died on 5 April after a short illness.
