National ‘slow news’ title reveals regional expansion plans

Duncan MavinA national “slow news” title is aiming to expand its regional presence after taking on a new journalist.

Tortoise Media has announced the appointment of Duncan Mavin, who joins as an editor with particular responsibility for building the website’s presence outside of London.

Duncan, pictured, will have a particular focus on his native North-East of England in the role, while Tortoise has also touted further expansion into other regions in future.

Duncan has previously worked at The Wall Street Journal and Dow Jones for 12 years, and was most recently editorial adviser to the chief executive at the latter.

Before that he held senior roles at organisations including Barron’s Groupn and Bloomberg News.

Tortoise was founded in 2019 by former Times editor James Harding and Katie Vanneck-Smith, ex-president of the WSJ and Dow Jones.

Said Duncan: “I’ve been watching closely what James and Katie have built at Tortoise over the past couple of years and it’s really exciting to be part of it.

“Journalism thrives when it is about getting stories that really matter to people who really care about them. Tortoise has already demonstrated a relentless focus on doing just that.”

Added James: “We are really proud that Duncan has chosen to join us at Tortoise and very excited to work with him.

“He has a formidable record in the world of business journalism and leading teams that investigate finance and decipher the corporate world.

“His arrival marks our first step in building newsrooms in metro areas outside London.

“Duncan’s returning home to the North-East and his role will also be to see if there’s a place for our slow, open journalism in this part of the country.”
