Journalists pay tribute as former editorial secretary dies aged 60

Pamela WilsonJournalists have paid tribute after a daily newspaper’s former editorial secretary died of a rare form of lung cancer aged 60.

Pamela Wilson worked at Glasgow daily The Herald as secretary for its business and sport departments for 12 years.

Among her other duties at The Herald was taking down Alex Salmond’s words for his column by telephone.

Pamela, pictured, went on to work for ScottishPower, where she was PA to the main board of directors.

Herald journalist Alf Young told the paper: “Assisting department heads as contrasting as Ronald Dundas and Ronnie Anderson could not have been easy.

“But she handled the mostly male journalists on both desks with a quiet but determined finesse.

“I also remember her quiet but calm assurance on days when the news was big and fast-moving and tempers were fraying as deadlines approached.”

Pamela, who was married to Roderick, died on 14 April.

Roderick said of her time with The Herald: “She said it was such a vibrant place.

“It was the best time of her secretarial career. It was colourful and busy, and for her there was never a dull moment – not one in all the years she was there.”
