Journalist who spent 45 years with same paper dies aged 92

Terry GaylardA journalist who spent 45 years with the same newspaper has died aged 92.

Tributes have been paid to Terry Gaylard, former Devizes reporter with the Wiltshire Gazette & Herald.

Terry, pictured, joined the Gazette as a cub reporter aged 16 after leaving Devizes Grammar School.

He retired in 1990.

Ian Girvan, who worked as a junior reporter for him in 1962, told the Gazette & Herald: “He was a very kind and tolerant man. I was fortunate to have him as a boss.

“He left me to it and wasn’t too prescriptive about things.

“He was that old fashioned sort of local journalist that is so rare these days. He knew everything on his patch.”

Former colleague Nigel Kerton described Terry as “Mr Devizes”.

He added: “Everyone knew who he was. He was a real old fashioned professional.”

Terry is survived by his wife Jan, to whom he had been married since 1986.

She said: “I have had so many messages of condolence from people, and at least a dozen bunches of flowers.

“I am just so pleased he is remembered by so many people. He would have been very pleased with that.”

No date has been set for the funeral, and details will be announced via funeral directors Winchcombe in Devizes.
