Journalism job created in news site’s bid to expand Gaelic sports coverage

Ryan smithA new journalism job is being created as part of a city news website’s bid to increase its coverage of Gaelic games.

Belfast Live is investing in its first dedicated Gaelic Athletic Association reporter to cover sports such as hurling, camogie and Gaelic football.

The GAA has been covered by the Reach plc-owned title since it launched six years ago.

But editor Ryan Smith told HTFP the recruitment of the new reporter will allow the site to take its coverage of the Irish sports “to the next level”.

Ryan, pictured, said: “We’ve covered GAA where we can since the website was launched six years ago but we’re delighted to be able to invest in our first dedicated GAA reporter to take our coverage to the next level.

“It’s always been something that we wanted to cover in-depth when the time was right.

“We’ve created a lot of new roles since I became editor just over a year ago and I don’t think there’s ever been as big a response from journalists interested in the role.

“Traditional sports reporting has changed in many ways in the last few years and we want to do things differently and in the way that Belfast Live readers expect.

“We’ve been the best read commercial news website in Northern Ireland for quite some time now but it’s still very exciting when we can invest in areas that we want to grow.”
