Hyperlocals to discuss sector’s future at rearranged conference

Matt Abbott newHyperlocal titles are set to discuss the future of their sector at a rearranged conference next month.

The Independent Community News Network is set to host the conference, entitled ‘Community Journalism: Building a Sustainable Future’, on 14 and 15 September,

The event was originally scheduled to take place in April 2020, but had to be cancelled due to coronavirus.

The conference, sponsored by the Google News Initiative and NUJ Training Wales, will be held online via Zoom.

Announcing the conference, ICNN deputy director Matt Abbott, pictured, said: “As journalism emerges from its most challenging period yet, we have an opportunity to build a sustainable, vibrant, inclusive future that has communities at its heart.

“This online conference will bring together community journalists, academics, policymakers, innovators, and technologists to explore a sustainable future of independent community news, celebrate its recent successes, hear from its most ardent practitioners, and share new ideas, skills, and tools to help build the next generation of community and hyperlocal news.

“We will present recent findings from academic research, examples of emerging business models and innovations, and discuss what a sustainable future for community journalism looks like with a panel of special guests.”
