Daily teams up with charity for campaign as both celebrate 100th anniversary

A regional daily has launched a fundraising campaign for a charity to mark the 100th anniversary of both institutions.

The Dorset Echo has set itself a target to raise £1,921 for the Royal British Legion, celebrating the fact both the newspaper and the charity started life in May 1921.

The Echo is celebrating its own centenary by publishing a special limited edition 64-page nostalgia magazine, pictured below.

The title was first published on 28 May 1921 as the Dorset Daily Echo and Weymouth Dispatch.

Dorset 100

Claire Wainwright, the RBL’s community fundraiser for Dorset, told the newspaper: “In the year when both organisations are celebrating their centenaries, we are very grateful to the Dorset Echo for choosing the Royal British Legion as its Charity of the Year.

“The ongoing impact of the Covid-19 pandemic has left some in our Armed Forces community in dire need of urgent assistance, and they are continuing to face further hardships.

“The support of the Dorset Echo and its readers will be as vital as ever as we continue our work to build better futures for those who have given so much for their country.”
