Daily shelves name change idea after reader feedback

A regional daily will keep its current name after consulting with readers over a possible change.

The Yorkshire Evening Post has confirmed it will continue to be published under its present title after editor Laura Collins asked readers earlier this year whether its name should reflect the fact it is “the newspaper for Leeds”.

However, the YEP has revealed a forthcoming relaunch which will see it adopt a new blue and yellow masthead.

In an editorial confirming the retention of the YEP’s change, Laura also mentioned “a couple of changes” to its newsroom which means it now has a “dedicated team of 17 reporters”, while Joseph Keith has been promoted from head of news to deputy editor of the JPIMedia-owned daily.

The design changes will come into effect from Saturday’s edition, which will be rebranded as ‘the big Leeds weekend edition’.

In her editorial, Laura wrote: “No other news brand has this level of commitment to journalism in the city dedicated to telling its story – and that just shows how much we value you, our loyal readers.

“And as our vibrant city comes out of its lockdown slumber, we’re launching a new weekend edition with a brand new 24-page guide from Saturday.

“It will be packed full of stories to make sure we’re the go-to place for how to spend your precious time in our city centre with all the latest tips about what’s on and where to visit.

“We’re also going to be getting a new look with a brand new masthead, as we look to cement our position in the heart of city life.

“We’re still going to keep our name but we want to be more reflective of our very proud Leeds heritage.”

Laura went on to note regular features including Retro, Inside Elland Road, Green Post Rebooted and puzzles would continue to be published.

She added: “We are not like other publishers. We have been here telling our city’s stories the longest and we will be here longer still with your continued support.

“And we promise to keep fighting your corner – we’re all Leeds aren’t we.”
